Ultra Fabs Dummy Bar Project
This past month Matt Blades of Ultra Fab & Machine sought out Wolverine for our large milling capabilities. He had a project in mind, machining replacement dummy bar heads used in a steel foundry. These heads pull the molten steel along a pit in a foundry utilizing the continuous casting process. Matt needed the large machining window of the Samsung MCV 1060 to accomplish the first phase of machining in this project.
The torch cut blanks received at Wolverine weighed in at just over 7,000 pounds for the large head, and over 5,000 pounds for the small head.
Ray Swain, one of our milling specialists, joined Wolverine in October of this past year. His 30 years of experience has proven to be a valuable asset for the company, especially on this project. Ray utilized the large window (X 98.4 inches Y 41.7 inches) of the Samsung MVC 1060 Vertical Milling Center to machine the parts pictured below.
Wolverine’s Special Project Manager Kodi Davis designed the program for the MCV 1060 using the MasterCam software. The dummy bar heads have a radius that follows the profiles of both the pockets and fingers. Machining these, combined with facing all surfaces, gave Kodi a few unique learning opportunities in writing and executing the programs. Ray worked closely with Kodi Davis, to ensure the project was successful.
